Everyone needs different information or has different interests ... visually impaired and blind people, hearing impaired and deaf people, wheelchair users with and without assistance, people with learning disabilities, people with mobility impairments, people with strollers ... Our goal: SHOWING STYRIA for everyone!
This is SHOWING STYRIA 2023
SHOWING STYRIA 2023 at Tierwelt Herberstein focuses on the many different animals and plants and their habitats. SHOWING STYRIA explains why it is so important for us humans to preserve this biological diversity.
For SHOWING STYRIA, a new House of Biodiversity is being designed at Herberstein Animal World. Biodiversity is another word for biological range. In the House of Biodiversity you can see and learn how many different species of animals and plants there are and how beautiful their colors and shapes are. In the exhibition there are many games and things to try. It is explained that each animal and plant has very specific important tasks. If a species becomes extinct, then something unique on our planet is missing for the future.
The second venue of SHOWING STYRIA is the Path of Diversity in the Herberstein Animal World. On the Path of Diversity, there are interesting stations called natural sites. There you can learn even more about how different animals and plants work together. At one of these natural sites there is a six meter high tower. From there you can see far into the beautiful natural landscape of the European protected area Feistritzklamm.
The third site is a mobile pavilion. There, an exhibition is shown that deals, for example, with the question of why life exists on Earth and not on other planets. Artistic films can be seen and heard on a large screen and on the floor in the pavilion.

House of Biodiversity
In the House of Biodiversity you can learn about the fascinating diversity of animals, plants and mushrooms. Biodiversity is another word for biological diversity, which is the abundance of different species and habitats. The exhibition in the House of Biodiversity shows and describes how different creatures have adapted to certain habitats. The exhibition also shows what all has to work together for animals and plants to live well in a certain place.
In an ecosystem, there is an exchange between species. For example, mushrooms and trees connect with each other in the soil. There they exchange nutrients and information. There is also give and take between us humans and nature. We get fresh air and clean water from nature. We grow fruits and vegetables in the soil. We use many plants and mushrooms as medicine. And in a beautiful, natural landscape we can relax. Even in our bodies live millions of tiny creatures, for example bacteria, which we need to stay healthy.
But we humans are just one part of the ecosystem in which we live together with other species. And yet, over the last few centuries, we have very much altered the entire planet for our own purposes. This is disrupting the livelihoods of many other living things. If we alter habitats so that certain species can no longer live there, they eventually become extinct. And when a living creature becomes extinct, the ecosystem lacks the services that precisely this plant or animal provided for all the others. That's why it's also important for us humans that there are landscapes in which many different species can live well. This is how diversity of life is preserved.
In the exhibition in the House of Biodiversity you can see many examples of all these connections and learn more about the many animals, plants and mushrooms that often live right on our doorstep. In addition, at the House of Biodiversity you can explore many things playfully, try them out, shape landscapes, identify species and much more!
The House of Biodiversity is barrier-free. The tables of the individual stations are accessible by wheelchair. The information desk has a wheelchair-accessible area and there is an inductive hearing system. The area on the upper floor is accessible by stair lift.
Assistance Dogs:
Assistance dogs are welcome at the House of Biodiversity.
Admission is free for assistants and assistance dogs.
Infrastructure:
Women's/men's and accessible restrooms, as well as a baby changing facility, are located in the foyer of the indoor playground. They are accessible via the outdoor area.
Marked barrier-free parking spaces are available in the Tierwelt Herberstein parking lot.
An asphalt path leads from the entrance area to the House of Biodiversity. We recommend that wheelchair users visit Tierwelt Herberstein and the STEIERMARK SCHAU with an escort. Not all paths in Tierwelt Herberstein are asphalted and there are many uphill and downhill slopes to negotiate due to the terrain. In addition, the rolling resistance on the outdoor paths should not be underestimated.
It is possible to use the slow train. This is also possible for wheelchair users.

Path of diversity
On the Path of Diversity at Herberstein Animal World, you can learn what habitat diversity is and how natural networks function. You can also see how beautiful the Feistritzklamm natural landscape is. The Feistritzklamm gorge is a nature reserve and borders directly on Herberstein Animal World.
On the path of diversity there are stations called natural sites:
The Herberstein Relief is the first nature showplace stands in front of the main entrance to Tierwelt Herberstein. It shows an overview of the Feistritzklamm nature reserve and explains where to find the nature sites and the House of Biodiversity.
The second nature showplace is called Network Forest. Here it is explained how animals, plants and mushrooms live together in the forest and how everything there is interconnected.
In the Arena of Habitats, the most important native large-scale habitats are presented. Here you can sit down and learn more about what interacts in these habitats and how to protect them.
The Panorama Feistritzklamm stands at a high point in the terrain. Here there is a viewing terrace and a six-meter high tower from which you can see far into this very special landscape.
The research mobile is located at the foot of the Herberstein castle rock. Here, scientists observe the biodiversity in the surrounding area. But here you can also learn how we can all explore nature ourselves!
Assistance Dogs:
Assistance dogs are welcome at the Path of Diversity.
Admission is free for assistants and assistance dogs.
The three natural sites "Arena of Habitats", "Panorama Feistritzklamm" and the Research Mobile are not accessible with a wheelchair due to the terrain.
The viewing platform of the Panorama Tower can be reached via a spiral staircase.

Outdoor area and access to the pavilion:
The mobile pavilion can and may be accessed from all sides. The difference in height between the grassy area and the pavilion floor is about 10 cm, but it is not the same in all places.
The access is asphalted and barrier-free for people with wheelchairs, people with e-wheelchairs, people with walkers, people with mobility impairments and people with strollers. An independent visit is possible.
There are columns with text in the outdoor area. The passage width between the columns is 90 cm.
The floor in the outdoor area is matt white and non-slip. There are no markings on it and no tactile guidance system.
For blind and visually impaired people, the contrast between the white plastic floor and the mirrored façade is difficult to perceive. Stickers on each side of the side mirrors support orientation. The visitor service team will be happy to assist you on site.
Interior of the pavilion:
As a visitor, you do not have to open any doors; there is only one open passageway.
There is enough space for wheelchair users to move freely in the interior installation.
The floor inside the pavilion is black. There is seating in the interior. Armchairs with armrests for people with mobility impairments are available.
Please note that when entering or leaving the dark interior, the great contrast between the brightness outside (sunlight, white floor, mirrored facade) and the darkness inside can cause problems.
Projections:
The exhibition installation in the pavilion consists of large projection surfaces and also includes parts of the floor.
The texts accompanying the projections are spoken in German and English and partly subtitled.
Important information for people with cerebral seizure disorders: Please note that there may be occasional fast cuts and strong light-dark contrasts in the projections!
Assistance dogs:
Assistance dogs are welcome in the mobile pavilion. Please note that it is noisy inside the mobile pavilion!
Infrastructure:
Ladies/men's and barrier-free WCs as well as a baby changing facility are located in front of the entrance to Tierwelt Herberstein (parking lot) and can be used free of charge.
Marked barrier-free parking spaces are available in the parking lot of Tierwelt Herberstein.
The mobile pavilion is located on the other side of the national road L409. You can reach it barrier-free from the parking lot via a bridge.
If you have any questions on site, please contact the visitor service team.
